Thursday, April 12, 2018

Update: 7:29PM ACCORDING to a statement from the Government, there are plans to modernise equipment at the Nadi Weather Office and thereby enhance its ability to forecast.

The statement quotes Director Meteorological Services Ravin Kumar who said the organisation would ensure it was well-equipped with the latest technology.

It has two radars in Labasa and Nausori.

"The radar in Nadi is undergoing an upgrade this month for which government had allocated $1.8million. Rotuma is also earmarked to have a new radar soon," Mr Kumar said.

The office also plans to improve its ability to advise accurately about storm surges and ocean swells.

"The environmental conditions are still conducive to see that the tropical disturbances develop into deep depressions and also tropical cyclones in the next three to four weeks or outside the season," Mr Kumar said.

More details in tomorrow's The Fiji Times.
