EU allocates $10m for Pacific project

ABOUT 4 million euro ($F10m) has been allocated by the European Union to assist the growth of the coconut industry in the Pacific.

This was highlighted in a meeting in Nadi yesterday where representatives from 14 Pacific Island Countries are attending a training workshop on coconut production and seeds systems.

According to the leader of the Pacific Community's (SPC) Coconut Industry Development for the Pacific (CIDP) project, Naheed Hussein, the project worked closely with small-scale producers who were engaged in the coconut value chains.

"Under the 10th European Development Fund, the European Union has allocated $F10m to assist the growth of the coconut industry in the Pacific through this project which SPC is implementing," he said.

"This agreement is part of a broader economic partnership between the European Union and African Caribbean Pacific (ACP) states. The project seeks to strengthen regional integration of related markets and intensify production across the Pacific ACP group of countries. This has been an opportunity to work with the private sector to expand inclusive and sustainable growth in the Pacific," Mr Hussein said.
