HEALTH Minister Rosy Akbar says 80 per cent of deaths that occur in Fiji's hospitals are caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Ms Akbar made the comment in Parliament yesterday while responding to a question from Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa.

She said NCDs were a serious issue and posed a lot of pressure on the country's health system.

"NCDs can be prevented with proper diet and physical activity and of course discipline when it comes to getting regular checks and taking medications," Ms Akbar said.

She said there was a lot of impact of NCDs in the country and one of which was premature death.

"Low productivity, too much dependency on medicine, low quality of life and the loss of life very prematurely," Ms Akbar added.

"At the end of the day, it is about our choices and our lifestyle."

She said individuals were responsible for their own health and it needed to be promoted to each individual.

"More and more people are losing their limbs and this is because of the uncontrolled blood pressure and uncontrolled sugar levels.

"Sometimes patients reach our hospitals and there is liitle or no choice left and if they wanted to save their life, we had to cut off their limb and that is the reality of life.

"So let us all become champions of healthy living and I'm sure that is achievable and let us promote self-discipline."

within ourselves to take down to our communities."
