Commonwealth lends climate change support

THE Commonwealth has given its support towards the Fijian Government's leadership to combat climate change.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London, England, Commonwealth secretary general Baroness Patricia Scotland said they continued to stand behind Fiji's leadership in the fight against climate change through Fiji's Presidency of the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP23), adding they would facilitate action teams to work together for the Commonwealth Blue Charter Fund.

In a statement issued yesterday, Government said the PM provided Ms Scotland with an update on Fiji's COP23 presidency and the implementation of its outcomes, and indicated the Talanoa Dialogue introduced by Fiji in Bonn last year would continue when Poland was handed over the COP presidency.

"He also highlighted the country's plans for celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fiji's national independence in 2020," the statement said.

The statement said Mr Bainimarama would have a series of high-level forums and meetings during the week, where he was expected to meet various counterparts in attendance to strengthen Fiji's bilateral relations, build support for the global campaign for climate action, and promote Fijian business and trade.

"Fiji's attendance at CHOGM aims to attract investment, highlight the unique challenges of small states, and draw attention to the nation's sustainable and resilient model of economic growth."

The PM is also expected to personally meet the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and members of the royal family.

Mr Bainimarama is accompanied by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya and Fiji's high level Climate Champion Inia Seruiratu.
